California housing sales improve 'slightly'

The state's seasonally adjusted sales figures are improving "ever so slightly," the California Association of Realtors' deputy chief economist said Friday.

"I even hesitate to use the word rebound," state economist Robert Kleinhenz said of the California housing market. "Maybe the operative word should be 'stabilize.'"

It was a small of glimmer of hope presented Friday as part of the Women's Council of Realtors' local chapter meeting at Woodhaven Country Club in Palm Desert.

Coachella Valley housing sales in January were down 15.3 percent from the previous year, according to the association's latest figures.

Those are the raw figures. A historical analysis of seasonally adjusted figures reveals other trends.

Since fall, the state's seen seasonally adjusted sales inch upward, Kleinhenz said.

Jean Zimbro has seen the increase first hand.

"We're seeing a lot more sales in the higher end" and luxury market, said Zimbro, Women's Council vice president of membership.

"People with money know this is the time to build their wealth."

Kleinhenz says there are still many factors to work out - including on the credit side - before the market will rebound.

He doesn't expect any "significant recovery" in the next year.

"It's not like we're seeing things shoot back up," he said of sales trends. "But we're hoping it will improve as we go forth."
